MOT
Motorcycle MOT in London: what gets checked and how to pass first time
Your motorcycle MOT is due and you want it to pass first time. Here's exactly what happens at a motorcycle MOT, what gets checked and the simple things you can do before you ride in. We're a DVSA approved MOT station for motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in Alperton, Wembley, and we test motorcycles from all over London every day.
When does a motorcycle need an MOT?
A motorcycle needs its first MOT when it's three years old, then every year after that. You can get it tested up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out and still keep the same renewal date, so there's no reason to leave it to the last minute.
How much does it cost?
At London Motorcycle Centre a motorcycle, scooter or moped MOT is £29.65, the maximum fee set by the DVSA. Book it together with a service and the MOT is half price at £14.83. There's nothing to pay online, you pay at the centre on the day.
What gets checked
- Lights: headlight, aim, tail light, brake light, indicators and hazard lights
- Brakes: condition and performance, front and rear
- Tyres and wheels: condition, damage and tread depth
- Steering and suspension: play, damage and leaks
- Frame: cracks, damage and corrosion
- Exhaust: security, leaks and noise
- Fuel system: leaks and the fuel cap
- Horn, registration plate and VIN: all present, working and readable
- Drive chain: condition, tension and the sprockets
Five checks to do before you come in
- Walk round with the ignition on and check every bulb and indicator works
- Look at your tyres. Over 50cc you need at least 1mm of tread across three quarters of the width, and no cuts or bulges
- Squeeze both brakes. They should feel firm, not spongy
- Press the horn
- Clean your number plate so it's easy to read
Most fails we see are simple: a blown bulb, a worn tyre or a slack chain. Spot them early and they're quick fixes in our workshop on the same day.
